Neonatal Gastrointestinal Assessment

This module includes the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system, normal and abnormal findings of the GI system in your daily assessment, and a description of a number of pathologies related to the GI system. It also includes two case scenarios that put into practice the learner's understanding of the material.
This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the newborn patient. Neonatal Gastrointestinal Assessment is also used as a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of Neonatology/Nursery.
TARGET audience
This module is designed as an orientation tool for nurses new to this population as well as a review for nurses who are currently working in the Newborn/Neonatal Sector.
Objectives
*Describe the basic anatomy of the gastrointestinal system
*Explain the physiology of digestion and the basic roles of the gastrointestinal organs
*Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings during a gastrointestinal assessment
*Explain the signs, symptoms and care of an infant diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, an abdominal wall defect, or a malrotation with/without volvulus
*Explain the signs, symptoms and care of an infant diagnosed with an obstruction, a fistula/atresia or gastroesophageal reflux
*Explain the signs, symptoms and care of an infant diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis
*Review related tests, procedures and laboratory findings
*Integrate gastrointestinal assessment techniques and critical thinking ability by the use of case scenarios
